On Screen: The Motive and the Cue (Encore) (15)

An encore big-screen screening of the National Theatre production of Jack Thorne's The Motive and the Cue, directed by Sam Mendes and starring Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud.

This filmed stage production, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Sam Mendes, was captured live during its sold-out 2023 London run. Set in 1964, it follows Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, as he prepares to play Hamlet in an experimental Broadway production under John Gielgud's direction, with rehearsals threatening to unravel as two eras of theatre collide. Mark Gatiss's performance as Gielgud won an Olivier Award. The screening runs approximately three hours and is age-rated 15.
