Autumn Hedge Tour - The Origins, Ecology and Management of Devon's Hedges
About
A guided two-hour tour of Hood Manor's varied hedges, exploring their origins, ecology and management, followed by refreshments.
Proper Edges leads a guided tour of the many and varied hedges at Hood Manor, timed for late autumn when hedge structure and growth patterns are most visible. The tour covers the ancient origins and diverse ecology of Devon's hedges, their value to wildlife and people, and management techniques including planting, trimming and coppicing, with recent examples of hedge laying and associated skills such as stone facing and turf hedging. Hedges can be seen at different stages of their growth cycle, and methods of ageing hedges are discussed. The two-hour tour is followed by refreshments including homemade gluten-free mince pies and mulled juice.
