A People's History of Music (During Times of Authoritarianism)
About
Mississippi Records founder Eric Isaacson presents his audio-visual show tracing global music scenes that resisted authoritarianism, with free entry at Verdant Brewing Co.
Eric Isaacson, founder of Mississippi Records, tours his audio/visual presentation A People's History of Music, an around 90-100 minute performance/screening rather than an academic lecture. It charts underground musical resistance during periods of authoritarianism, covering music from Ethiopia, Slovenia, Kenya, the USA and beyond, using archival film, sound clips and images. Figures discussed range from The Cramps and Jimmie Rodgers to Ethiopian pop stars, Portland punks and Russian bootleggers, alongside stories of leaders' attempts to use music as propaganda.
