Masterclass: The Wreck of the Deutschland

The Reader's founder Jane Davis leads a Shared Reading masterclass on Gerard Manley Hopkins' The Wreck of the Deutschland, a poem inspired by the 1875 shipwreck of the SS Deutschland and the deaths of five Franciscan nuns fleeing religious persecution. The session examines Hopkins' imagery, language and themes of faith, suffering and courage, with no prior knowledge of poetry required. Tea, coffee, cakes and a vegan-friendly light lunch are included in the six-hour day (with a one-hour lunch break).
