About
Shohei Imamura's documentary lets Etsuko, a Yokosuka bar hostess, recount Japan's postwar decades through her own vivid life of survival, black markets and American occupation.
This 1970 documentary by Shōhei Imamura tells the story of postwar Japan through the recollections of Etsuko, who ran a Yokosuka bar serving foreign clientele. Blending her frank testimony with archival newsreel footage, the film traces a quarter-century of national history, from the atomic bombings and black-market years to the Korean War era. Featuring Emiko Akaza, it stands as a striking example of Imamura's interest in ordinary lives lived at society's margins.
