Duncan Campbell: A New No
About
A free exhibition of Duncan Campbell's new commission A New No, a flip-disc screen animation work, at Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art.
A New No is a new commission by Turner Prize-winning artist Duncan Campbell, occupying GoMA's ground floor gallery as the final exhibition of the gallery's 30th anniversary programme. At its centre is a flip-disc electromagnetic screen animating graphic images — graphs, flow charts, hand-drawn lines and Soviet-style cut-out animation — with a single narrator's voice roaming the gallery as a counterpoint to the screen. The work draws on flip-dot technology first installed at the Montreal Stock Exchange, exploring the seductive impression of order that market data creates. Originally commissioned for Glasgow International in 2020, this is Campbell's first major work shown in a Scottish institution since his 2014 Turner Prize win.
