Khadija Cecile Niang: There are people who belong to the sea
About
An exhibition of new works by Khadija Cecile Niang exploring the sea as a space of labour and leisure, shown alongside selected works from The Ingram Collection.
Khadija Cecile Niang presents a new body of work inspired by a visit to N'Gor Island in Senegal, where surfers and fishermen share boats to reach the waves, examining how coastal communities' relationship to the sea shapes ideas of work, time and rest. For the exhibition she interviewed relatives, friends, fishers and surfers about the sensations of approaching the sea for sustenance versus play. Niang has also selected works from The Ingram Collection to sit alongside her own, engaging with the history of painting the sea in Britain. The show is the annual Ingram Prize solo exhibition, showcasing one of the 2026 prize winners.
