Jonathan Bate: The Garden

Sir Jonathan Bate discusses his illustrated book The Garden, exploring humanity's relationship with gardens, at Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford.

Sir Jonathan Bate presents The Garden, a richly illustrated cultural history examining how gardens have shaped humanity's longings for beauty, order, innocence and belonging. Drawing on poetry, painting, philosophy, mythology and religion — from Ovid and the Song of Solomon to Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Emily Dickinson — he traces how the garden has inspired great art and offered consolation. The event lasts one hour and takes place in person at Blackwell's Bookshop.
