Meet the Marquise: Portraits, Power, Poses and Pretend
About
A full-day school workshop at South Shields Museum exploring portraiture through Pierre Mignard's The Marquise de Seignelay, with role play and collagraph printing.
This full-day workshop for schools is inspired by Pierre Mignard's 1691 painting The Marquise de Seignelay, on display at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery as part of the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour. Children use sensory engagement, role play and group work to explore how the artist used colour, posture, clothing and setting to tell a story. The afternoon is spent making a creative response using collagraphy, with each child creating a 3-D printing plate and taking home their own print. Suitable for KS1, KS2, KS3 and SEND groups; sessions run four hours.
