Specialist Tour | Black History Month: Plants and Empire

A free specialist tour at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre exploring plants' role in empire, from enslaved-labour crops to colonial science.

This Black History Month specialist tour uses the Glasgow Museums Collection to examine how plants shaped colonial empire, from land cleared to produce goods like sugar, whose production relied on enslavement, to the development of quinine. It looks at the use of plants in science, food production and technology as a key factor in empire, and considers how this continues to shape lives today.
