AGM and Presidential Address – The Great Fire did not take place…quite as you thought it did…
About
LAMAS's AGM followed by President John Schofield's lecture re-examining the impact of the Great Fire of 1666 on the City of London.
The London and Middlesex Archaeological Society holds its AGM at 6.00pm, after which President John Schofield delivers his Presidential Address. His lecture surveys houses and other secular buildings in the City of London from 1600 to 1670, drawing on recent topographical and archaeological studies. He argues that the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed only twenty per cent of the conurbation then standing, and that the larger unaffected area preserves much evidence for life in London during the century, requiring a rethink of what scholars have said about the Fire.
