About

Dr Amy Gaeta gives a talk on making poetry with speech-to-text AI through feminist and disability perspectives, followed by a Q&A.

Dr Amy Gaeta examines the possibilities and contradictions of making poetry with automatic speech recognition, drawing on feminist theories of passivity and disability theories of creativity and access. She introduces the concept of 'willed passivity' — a feminist crip practice of embracing dependence, bodily limitation and technological mediation — and argues that leaving transcription errors and glitches in poems challenges ideals of autonomous authorship. The talk explores the ethical tensions of AI-powered access software and how disabled artists navigate accessibility within systems of extraction. It is followed by a Q&A with Alberto Garcia, Librarian at Rosemary Murray Library, and the audience; booking is required.
