Sonic Cinema: Daïchi Saïto
About
A 35mm screening of three experimental films by Montreal-based artist Daïchi Saïto, followed by an in-person Q&A with the filmmaker and curator Oliver Dickens.
Sonic Cinema and the Japan Foundation present a programme of films by Montreal-based artist Daïchi Saïto, projected from his personal 35mm prints. The screening comprises earthearthearth (2021, 30 min.), Trees of Syntax, Leaves of Axis (2009, 10 min.) and Engram of Returning (2015, 18'30 min.), works grounded in abstract approaches to landscape, rhythm and perception, made through optical manipulation and frame-by-frame photochemical treatments. The films are guided by improvised soundtracks from Malcolm Goldstein and Jason Sharp. Saïto joins in person afterwards for a Q&A with series curator Oliver Dickens.
