Shapeshifting Witches & Female Power
About
Two authors discuss shapeshifting, witchcraft and female power in folklore and ancient British stories at The Portico Library.
Part of the Hinterland Festival strand 'Creating a New Society', this panel brings together two authors in conversation. Elizabeth Sulis Kim traces humanity's troubled relationship with animals and the natural world, from prehistoric caves through the early modern witch trials to modern reclamation of the word 'witch', drawing on her book The Book of Beasts. Dr Brigid Lowe then explores nature, magic and female power in the Mabinogi, Britain's oldest prose stories, and how their transformative women speak to modern reclaimed identities.
