Thursday Talk: Wuthering Rites
About
Dr Helen Frisby delivers November's Thursday Talk on Victorian death, mourning and burial customs, with the Brontës' own bereavements as backdrop.
This talk explores Victorian attitudes towards death, mourning, memory and the hope of reunion, using the Brontë family's repeated bereavements and their parish role as a backdrop. Dr Helen Frisby, historian and author of Traditions of Death and Burial, examines the rituals that helped past communities cope with grief and considers what these ideas can still offer today. The talk runs twice on the same day: an in-person session at 2pm in the Brontë Space at the Old School Room, and an online session at 7:30pm on Zoom, with a recording sent to online ticket holders afterwards.
