Brother Tree Sound: A Journey Through British Folk Music
About
Brother Tree Sound performs Vaughan Williams and Holst string quartet works alongside their own folksong transcriptions from England, Ireland and Wales.
Brother Tree Sound give two performances of a programme exploring British folk music's influence on 20th-century composers. The concert features Vaughan Williams's String Quartet No. 1 in G minor and Holst's Phantasy Quartet on British Folksongs, both written in the wake of the composers' folk-inspired orchestral breakthroughs around the founding of the English Folk Dance Society in 1911. The programme closes with the quartet's own arrangements of folksongs from England, Ireland and Wales. This is the first of two concerts in three days exploring British string quartet works, and also the first of two Brother Tree Sound concerts this year, with a second focusing on contemporary British music in January.
