Dockyard Mateys Tour

A volunteer-led 90-minute walking tour of the Historic Dockyard Chatham guided by two former Dockyard apprentices sharing their personal stories.

Two former Dockyard Mateys, David Lawrence and John Masters, lead a relaxed walking tour around the Historic Dockyard Chatham as seen through their own eyes. Both began apprenticeships at the dockyard — in 1960 and 1970 respectively — and worked there until the 1980s, and now volunteer at the site. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and starts in Museum Square, running on the last Wednesday of the month from April to October.
