Black Beyond Data: Working with Descendant Communities — Symposium
About
A free one-day symposium at the National Maritime Museum on descendant-led approaches to museum interpretation, care and ethical practice.
Museum X, Royal Museums Greenwich and Black Beyond Data at Johns Hopkins University have spent a year working with descendant community co-researchers on how collections connected to African presence and colonialism might be researched, interpreted and cared for differently. This symposium shares that learning through reflections from co-researchers, an emerging Ethical Framework for Working with Descendant Communities, the premiere of a filmed conversation with collector Michael Graham-Stewart, and discussions on shared authority and collaborative practice. The day runs 10:30am to 4:00pm with lunch provided; in-person tickets have sold out but free hybrid tickets remain available.
