Painting with light – the art of Gerard Ceunis
About
An exhibition of paintings by Belgian artist Gerard Ceunis, including Luminist works and local scenes from the museum's collection and a private family collection.
This exhibition at North Herts Museum showcases the work of Gerard Ceunis (1885–1964), a Belgian artist who came to England as a First World War refugee and settled in Hitchin, where he ran the 'Maison Gerard' clothes shop. It features oil paintings of local scenes from the museum's own collection alongside works borrowed from a private family collection, including his early Belgian Impressionist paintings in the Luminist style, focused on effects of light in the landscape. An accompanying illustrated catalogue by Rosamond Allwood and Martin Robb, available from the museum shop, explores the artist's life and journey from Belgium to Hitchin.
