Jamie Gianoutsos on In Rome's Long Shadow
About
Historian Jamie Gianoutsos discusses her new history of the republican tradition modern states inherited from ancient Rome at Topping & Company in St Andrews.
Historian Jamie Gianoutsos visits Topping & Company Booksellers to discuss In Rome's Long Shadow, her history of the republican tradition that modern states inherited from ancient Rome. The talk traces how Roman figures and ideas of liberty, virtue and corruption shaped the revolutionary birth of modern republics in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from America and France to Britain and Haiti. Gianoutsos, Professor of History at Mount St. Mary's University, Maryland, examines recurring patterns in the rise and fall of republics and what they reveal about challenges republics face today. Doors open at 6.50pm ahead of the 7.30pm start.
