About

A 45-minute lunchtime talk by York Archaeology at Kelham Island Museum on the archaeology of Sheffield's canal-side steelworks and malt house.

York Archaeology presents a 45-minute lunchtime talk on the impact of Sheffield's canal, completed in 1819, on local industry. Excavations along the waterway uncovered the Fitzalan Works steelworks — one of the best-preserved examples excavated in Sheffield in recent years — alongside George Parker's smaller works and a malt house that supplied beer to the growing workforce. The talk explores what these well-preserved remains reveal about Sheffield's industrial past and the dawn of the railway age.
