Surrey Architecture: Twentieth Century Buildings – GI 26 196
About
A five-week daytime course at the Guildford Institute exploring Surrey's twentieth-century architecture, from municipal buildings and suburbs to modern homes and churches.
This five-Tuesday course, taught by Hilary Underwood, examines the extensive building that transformed Surrey during the twentieth century as populations grew and London sprawled outwards. Sessions cover municipal architecture from grand Edwardian town halls to civic centres, the development of the Surrey suburb, and ground-breaking individual homes such as Oliver Hill's Joldwynds and Patrick Gwynne's The Homewood. Ecclesiastical architecture is also explored, including Guildford Cathedral and modern-style nonconformist and Catholic churches. Each session runs from 2pm to 4pm.
