About

A five-week art history course at the Guildford Institute exploring British portraiture from the Restoration to Hogarth, tutored by Hilary Underwood.

This five-session art history course traces British portraiture from the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, when Baroque grandeur and generalisation dominated through artists such as Kneller. It examines the individualistic work of John Michael Wright in the late seventeenth century, then studies Michael Dahl, Mary Beale and the Devis family. The course concludes with William Hogarth's forceful, characterful mid-eighteenth-century portraits, which heralded the golden age of British portraiture.
