Art History - Art in 18th Century Britain in 5 Parts: Part 3
About
Art historian Julia Musgrave lectures on new patrons, portraits and satire in 18th-century British art, part three of a five-part series.
This is the third of five lectures by art historian Julia Musgrave on art in 18th-century Britain. Part 3, 'A Mirror of Society - New Patrons, Portraits and Satire', examines how new stately homes and townhouses needed decoration, with old-money and nouveau-riche patrons buying art to display status and taste, and how a recognisably British style in landscape and portrait painting emerged, culminating in the founding of the Royal Academy. The session runs from 9:30am, with coffee served beforehand, and explores the work of William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney and Joseph Wright 'of Derby'.
