Art History - Art in 18th Century Britain in 5 Parts: Part 2
About
Art historian Julia Musgrave lectures on the emergence of a distinct British style in 18th-century painting, from St Martin's Lane to the Royal Academy.
This is Part 2 of a five-part lecture series on art in 18th-century Britain, delivered by art historian Julia Musgrave. The session explores how a recognisably British style in landscape and portrait painting developed by the end of the century, covering William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough alongside contemporaries such as George Romney and Joseph Wright 'of Derby'. The series also considers the social and political backdrop, the impact of the Grand Tour, and the contribution of non-native Royal Academicians. Coffee is available from 9:30am before the session.
