Art History - Art in 18th Century Britain in 5 Parts: Part 5
About
The final lecture in a five-part art history series, exploring how the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution shaped 18th-century British art.
This is the last session of a five-lecture series on art in 18th-century Britain, delivered by art historian Julia Musgrave. Part 5, 'Imagination, Introspection and Industry', examines how the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution shaped British art, against the backdrop of a London that was squalid and scandal-ridden yet full of opportunity. The series covers the rise of a recognisably British style in landscape and portrait painting, the founding of the Royal Academy, and the work of Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Romney and Joseph Wright of Derby, plus contributions from non-native Royal Academicians. Coffee is available from 9:30am.
