Wines of the Papacy – Talk & Tasting

A talk by Dr Andrew Ferrara on the medieval papacy and wine, with three tastings and canapés from 14th-century recipes.

An evening talk and wine tasting exploring the relationship between the medieval papacy and viticulture, hosted with Eat Medieval and Durham University. Dr Andrew Ferrara of Durham University's Archaeology Department speaks in three parts — the early Papacy in Rome, the papal states of the High Middle Ages in central Italy, and the popes in Avignon — each followed by a tasting of wines from the associated regions. Canapés and nibbles based on 14th-century regional recipes accompany the tastings.
