Art History: Art, Revolution and the Making of Cities
About
A four-part informal art history course exploring how artists portrayed cities at moments of upheaval, from Renaissance Florence to revolutionary Petrograd.
Tutors Trevor Allen and Sally Gower lead an informal series of four talks examining cities at turning points in history, including Florence in 1494, Paris in 1789 and 1815, and Petrograd in 1917. Each session considers how revolution, defeat in war and political upheaval shaped art, culture and society, and whether art itself was transformed by these crises. The talks encourage discussion, debate and questions, and no prior knowledge of art history is required. Participants must be aged 18 or over.
