About

A three-hour course on how the USA planned the Apollo Moon missions from 1960–67, ending with the Apollo 1 fire that killed Grissom, White and Chaffee.

Tutor Craig Underwood tells the story of how the United States planned its Moon mission under President John F. Kennedy, turning a long-held dream into a cold-war imperative. The session covers the engineering problems the USA set out to solve in the early Apollo programme between 1960 and 1967. It concludes with the tragic loss of Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 fire. The course runs 2–5pm and can be attended face to face at the Guildford Institute or online.
