From Straw to Plait: Traditional Straw Plaiting, Straw Work & Embroidery
About
A two-part Saturday workshop learning traditional straw plaiting and straw work, reinterpreted through embroidery for fashion.
Led by embroidery lecturer Scott Heron, this two-part workshop explores traditional straw plaiting and straw work, techniques with deep roots in the Chilterns and Luton's straw-hat industry. Part 1 covers local history, harvest traditions, material preparation, foundational plaits and a visit to a local allotment to see straw growing at source. Part 2 develops plaiting further with dyed straw, embellishment, embroidery and contemporary fashion applications. Materials and equipment are provided, and participants receive a resource board to support making between sessions; the workshop is open to beginners and those interested in heritage craft and sustainable textiles, aged 18+.
