Harvest Mouse Nest Survey Training - Westhay
About
A hands-on training session teaching how to survey and record harvest mouse nests at Honeygar Farm, contributing data to the National Harvest Mouse Survey.
Somerset Mammal Group runs this two-and-a-half-hour training session at Honeygar Farm, beginning with an introduction to the harvest mouse, its nests, and surveying and recording techniques. Participants then carry out an on-site survey, searching dense grasses for empty summer nests and recording any found, with no mice disturbed or seen. No previous experience is needed; attendees should bring gardening gloves, a walking stick, a tape measure and a mobile phone with the Mammal Mapper app, and wear clothing suitable for rough ground. The group encourages attendees to submit their records to the National Harvest Mouse Survey and Somerset Environmental Records Centre to support conservation of this Near Threatened species.
