Artistic Interiors by Avante-Garde Artists
About
Art historian Catherine Wallace lectures on how British avant-garde artists brought modernist art into domestic and commercial interiors in the early 20th century.
This illustrated talk traces how avant-garde artists in Britain moved art out of the gallery and into interiors between 1912 and 1942. It covers Wyndham Lewis, Spencer Gore, Jacob Epstein and Eric Gill designing the Cave of the Golden Calf cabaret in 1912, the Bloomsbury group's Omega Workshops with Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, and the Vorticists' Rebel Arts Centre and decorative schemes. Art historian Catherine Wallace discusses these interiors, including Charleston, Berwick Church and Lady Drogheda's dining room. The event is for ages 18+.
