About
Art historian Catherine Wallace gives an illustrated lecture contrasting botanical art with flower painting, from Dutch tulip mania to contemporary botanical painters.
Art historian Catherine Wallace surveys approaches to depicting flowers and the distinction between botanical art and flower painting. The talk covers Dutch botanical illustration at its zenith in the 17th and 18th centuries during the tulip wars, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist flower studies by artists such as Fantin-Latour, Monet and Van Gogh, and Marianne North's botanical explorations of the British Empire era. It concludes with modern British artists including Cedric Morris and Stanley Spencer and a selection of contemporary botanical painters. Age guidance 18+.
