The Edges of Cinema: Book Launch + little boy
About
A book launch for Erika Balsom's The Edges of Cinema paired with the London premiere screening of James Benning's film little boy.
The ICA celebrates the publication of Erika Balsom's essay collection The Edges of Cinema: Essays on Twenty-First Century Film Culture with the London premiere of James Benning's 2025 film little boy. The 73-minute film, winner of the grand prize at Paris's Cinéma du Réel festival, uses popular songs, political speeches and architectural models to traverse decades of U.S. history, examining settlement, racial violence, land use and unbelonging. Balsom's book argues that film culture is most vital at the margins, where the moving image meets visual art and documentary meets experimentalism. The screening is 18+ and begins with a 10-minute curated selection of trailers.
