Spoorthi Rao and Jasdeep Singh Degun – Evening Recital
About
A Leeds Song Festival double bill pairing Carnatic vocalist Spoorthi Rao with sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun exploring Indian classical song traditions.
This evening recital at the Howard Assembly Room forms part of the Leeds Song Festival and celebrates the human voice at the heart of Indian classical music. In the first half, Carnatic vocalist Spoorthi Rao performs South Indian classical music with traditional accompaniment. After the interval, sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun, joined by tabla, explores the Hindustani tradition of North India, drawing on the Imdadkhani gharana's gayaki ang style in which the sitar imitates the expressiveness of the human voice. The two-hour programme is presented in partnership with South Asian Arts UK and Opera North.
