Light Night Leeds: The Heat Beneath Our Feet
About
A free immersive floor projection with sound, part of Light Night Leeds, visualising heat, water and geothermal energy beneath the city.
This outdoor installation projects a looping video onto the ground, tracing geological layers and the movement of heat and water through rock beneath Leeds, accompanied by soundscapes drawn from seismic data and underground vibrations. Created by artists Lynn Wray and Rebecca Smith of Urban Projections, it draws on Geo Solutions research at the University of Leeds and the Stories from the Subsurface project, exploring how shallow geothermal networks could heat and cool buildings across the district. It runs continuously each evening from 6pm to 9.30pm and forms part of both Light Night Leeds and the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2026.
