Light Night Leeds: Symbiosis
About
A free Light Night Leeds installation projecting microscopic bacteria and yeast imagery and audio to explore symbiosis and the fermented biomaterial scoby.
Livi Smith's large-scale video projections reveal bacteria and yeast vibrating and moving in symbiotic harmony, magnifying organisms beyond what the eye can see. The work explores how these organisms collaborate to create scoby, a naturally occurring fermented biomaterial, with audio recordings of the scoby adding to the atmosphere. Created with lighting collaborator Callie O'Brien and the University of Leeds Bio-imaging & Flow Cytometry Facility, the installation invites audiences to consider what humans might learn from the biological world. It runs over two evenings as part of Light Night Leeds.
