Mevlevi Sema Ceremony
About
The Konya Turkish Sufi Music and Sema Ensemble performs the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony with live classical Sufi music and whirling dervishes.
This evening presents the Ottoman Mevlevi tradition through classical Turkish Sufi music and the sacred Sema Ceremony, featuring live musicians performing alongside whirling dervishes. The ceremony, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, comes from the Mevlevi order founded by Mevlânâ Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī. The 30-member ensemble includes 15 semazens, 8 instrumentalists, 6 vocalists and a postnişin leading the ceremony. The event runs for 90 minutes with no interval and forms part of the Cambridge Festival of Islamic Arts.
