Introduction to Hurdle Making
About
A two-day hands-on workshop learning traditional hazel hurdle making with award-winning Hampshire hurdle maker Darren Hammerton.
This two-day course teaches the full process of making traditional hazel hurdles, the woven fencing panels listed as endangered on the Heritage Crafts Red List. Led by Darren Hammerton, Butser Ancient Farm's tree-wright and an award-winning hurdle maker, participants learn splitting hazel rods, tying the bottom in and weaving, in a small group of up to six. The course runs 9.30am–3.30pm each day, with tools and materials included, and an optional £35 upgrade to stay overnight in one of the farm's ancient house recreations. For ages 18 and over.
