Moxie: Bobby

A display of Bobby's watercolour and acrylic response to Charles Cundall's Derby Day, part of the Moxie Generation Alpha curation project at mima.

Bobby's work The Disappointments of War (2026), made in watercolour and acrylic paint on paper, responds to Charles Cundall's Derby Day c.1923 from the Middlesbrough Collection. Bobby was drawn to the painting's intricate detail and ornate golden frame, but its crowded race-day scene suggested a battleground. Rather than depicting war directly, the work presents a post-conflict landscape emptied of people, focusing on light, shade and what remains after conflict. It is one of the individual displays in the Moxie: Generation Alpha Curates the Middlesbrough Collection project.
