About

A hands-on adult workshop at Avalon Archaeology exploring the prehistoric crafts of Ötzi, from fire-lighting and flint knapping to a copper axe casting demonstration.

Led by experimental archaeologist Marc Cox and Luke Atterton of Red Squirrel Ancestral Skills, this full-day workshop for adults aged 18+ explores the crafts of Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old prehistoric mummy. Participants make a traditional fire-lighting kit, learn the basics of flint knapping, build a replica of Ötzi's wooden packframe using steam bending and prehistoric joints, and try bark container making, natural fibre weaving, leather sewing and birch bark tar production. The day ends with Nick Ringastan casting a copper axe based on the original found with Ötzi. No previous experience is required, and tea, coffee and refreshments are included.
