Getting to Know Conifers

A beginner-friendly study day at Tyland Barn learning to identify conifers through foliage and cones, led by botanist Ros Bennett.

This Kent Wildlife Trust study day is an introduction to conifer identification, spent mostly in the Tyland Barn classroom examining foliage and cones. Participants learn the features that distinguish the main genera — pine, fir, cedar, juniper, cypress and yew — and practise using simplified keys on a variety of twigs and cones. The course is linked to a field trip to Bedgebury Pinetum the following day, and joining both study days is recommended.
