St Ives: The Artists and the Community, A Social History
About
Art historian David Tovey gives an illustrated talk on the social history of St Ives, 1860–1930, exploring the relationship between visiting artists and the local community.
Art historian David Tovey presents an illustrated talk examining St Ives between 1860 and 1930, when visiting artists encountered the everyday life of a working Cornish fishing town. He explores the town's fishing industry and Methodist traditions alongside the arrival of the artists, including stories of disagreements, scuffles and accusations of artists being 'paint-wasters'. The talk is followed by an audience Q&A, with doors opening at 5pm, and forms part of The Sherborne's Cornish Art Talks series.
