Historic Bricks and Tiles
About
A morning of three technical talks on the history, use, repair and conservation of brick, terracotta and tiles in Scotland's historic buildings.
This learning session challenges the perception of Scotland as a stone-built country, exploring how fired clay products such as brick, terracotta, faience and tiles have shaped the historic built environment. Three morning talks cover the material characteristics of brick clay products and 19th-century industrial production, how bricks and tiles were used in Scottish buildings and how they weather and decay, and the stages of repair including traditional and current restoration, cleaning techniques and sustainable sourcing of replacements. Aimed at building and heritage professionals and others responsible for traditional buildings, it counts towards CPD with a certificate of attendance. An in-person ticket includes a networking lunch, while a virtual ticket covers the morning session on Microsoft Teams.
